A little more serious talk about writing, before we get to a new story.
How do the inner reasons why you write affect what you write?
I ask this because this sort of “why do you write” goes deeper than others. What are the reasons you don’t share with everyone? What really keeps you going to the computer or notepad and sharing your thoughts?
Is it some sort of personal or private philosophy that’s awkward to discuss? You can comment anonymously if you want .
Is it an event in your past that inspires you to create stories to tell, maybe one that leads from that event into an alternative present?
Is it the urge to guide? To teach? Include other ways you teach in your response.
Is it to be the Entertainer, one responsible for manipulating reactions and emotions in particular ways? Tell us whether your goal is to make your audience laugh or cry.
Is it just some inner drive, a compulsion you can’t name that starts a story in your head that must be finished—preferably to be shared?
Or is there some other reason? Maybe you feel too shy to share that reason normally, but again, you can comment anonymously.
Why am I asking this question?
The short answer is that when we can identify the reasons we write, it can inform our writing, make us more intentional, and open up chains of thought we might not otherwise consider. It can even lead to new characters and plot twists.
Please share your responses in the comments. Perhaps we can build that into a chat thread/discussion.
